The City of Kingston has made it easier for homeowners in certain parts of the city to add a secondary suite to their properties. These suites, often known as in-law suites, allow the homeowner more flexibility in how they use their property. Whether it’s providing a separate living space to accommodate an aging parent, or bringing in a tenant to help with living expenses, secondary suites can be a great option for many people.
Check out the city of Kingston’s website for lots of great information about developing a secondary suite in your home. There you will find information about building requirements, eligibility, and the application process. There is even a grant program that may mean you could be reimbursed for your conversion costs! The pilot project is currently running in much of the west end of the city, as well as the former Pittsburgh township (east of the Cataraqui River). Check it out!
